About the Fairplain Food Pantry
The Fairplain Presbyterian commitment to easing hunger in our community began in the 1970s with donated food in a tiny room in the back of our sanctuary. Since then we have distributed thousands of food bags to people all over our area. We now work from a large, efficient area that was a major part of our church expansion 15 years ago.
Donations from church members, other churches and organizations, grants from FEMA, United Way, and local businesses support our work. The Fairplain Community Food Pantry is now a 501 c 3 organization to facilitate outside donations. Volunteers from the congregation and community help purchase and haul groceries, stock shelves, fill bags and distribute the food throughout the year.
The Food Pantry also helps supply the food we prepare for Soup Kitchen once a month.
Our food pantry does not discriminate in the provision of service against any person because of race, color, citizenship, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, disability, sexual orientation including gender identity, unfavorable discharge from the military or status as a protected veteran.
Donations for the Community Food Pantry: These funds are used to purchase products to restock our Food Pantry from Feeding America or by taking advantage of sales at local retail grocer. Food bags are packed for our weekly food distribution through United Way 211 and for food bags that our congregation deliver on the third Sunday of each month.
Soup Kitchen: These designated funds are used to purchase the needed main course, side dishes and desserts for our once-a-month lunch we prepare and serve at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen.
Monetary donations to the Community Food Pantry and/or Soup Kitchen should be made payable to Fairplain Presbyterian Church, with memo on check: “Community Food Pantry” and/or “Soup Kitchen”.
